Information we collect and how it is used.

Information we collect from Guardians and Members. When Guardians and Members download the Family app, Family collects information from their device, including device identifiers, IP address, device type, app version, and application and feature usage.

When Guardians designate a line as a Family Dependent, Guardians provide information about the Dependent, including the Dependent’s name and photo, phone number and other device information, date of birth, trusted contacts and emergency contacts.

Family also collects information about the features and settings that Guardians apply to the Dependent’s device, including time and usage restrictions and content filters. When a Guardian invites other Guardians and Members to join the Family account, we collect their names and phone numbers.

Additional information we collect from Guardians and Members depends on the Family plan, the features enabled and the permissions granted.

Location Sharing. If you allow it, we collect location from your mobile device and, if available, estimated location from the wireless network. With your permission, we also collect motion activity information (for example, if you’re walking, running, biking, or in a vehicle).

Call and Text Activity Monitoring. With your permission, we collect your device’s contact list to enhance the call and text activity information provided about Dependents in the Family app.

Driving Insights. If turned on, Family uses motion activity, location, and device usage data to calculate driving insights and behaviors, such as trip route and distance, top speed, hard braking, rapid acceleration, harsh cornering, potential crash events, and device usage while in a moving vehicle. We use this information to calculate individual trip driving scores and an overall driving score. Guardians can also designate their Dependent as a passenger or driver.

Safe Walk. If you choose to provide it, Family collects emergency contact information and requests that Guardians provide an emergency contact(s) for their Dependents. Emergency contacts receive a text message with the user’s real time device location if the user initiates a Safe Walk session or an SOS alert during a Safe Walk session, along with the start and end time of the Safe Walk session.

Roadside Assistance. Guardians and Members on the same Wireless account can enable Roadside Assistance for themselves, and Guardians can enable it for Dependents. When roadside assistance is requested, Family shares name, phone number, car details, the requested service, and the address provided for service with our Roadside Assistance provider, Signature Motor Club.

24/7 Assist. Guardians and Members on the same Wireless account can enable 24/7 Assist, a professional monitoring service provided by Viiz Communications (“Viiz”). When enabled, Family shares with Viiz your name, home address, and emergency contact(s). When you have an emergency and use 24/7 Assist, Family will also share your device’s location with Viiz agents who will use this information to assist you. Viiz agents may share your location with your emergency contact(s) or emergency services. Viiz is an independent company and applies when it provides assistance to you.

E-911. For mobile devices connected to the wireless network, we collect an E-911 address for emergency response.

Information we collect from devices designated as Dependents (including children under 13). For Dependent devices connected to the network, Family collects mobile device information, including phone number and the device’s make and model. When the Family Companion app is downloaded on a Dependent’s device, Family also collects additional information from the device, including other device identifiers, IP address, device type, app version, and application and feature usage.

Additional information we collect depends on the Family plan, the features enabled and the permissions granted.

Location Sharing. When the Family Companion app is installed, and when we have permission, Family collects the Dependent device’s GPS location and motion activity information (for example, if they’re walking, running, biking, or in a vehicle). When the Dependent’s device is connected to the network, we collect estimated location from the wireless network, even if the Companion app is not installed.

Call and Text Activity Monitoring: For Dependent devices connected to the wireless network, Family collects cellular call and text activity, even if the Companion app is not installed. If the Dependent allows it, we also collect the device contact list.

Web and App Activity Monitoring and Content Blocking: We request permission to install the Family Virtual Private Network (VPN) through which Family collects information about the Dependent’s website and mobile app usage.

Driving Insights. When the Dependent enables Driving Insights, Family collects motion and location information to calculate driving insights and behaviors, such as trip route and distance, top speed, hard braking, rapid acceleration, harsh cornering, and potential crash events, and will use this information to calculate individual trip driving scores. If the Dependent is not designated as a passenger by the Guardian, we also collect device usage while in a moving vehicle, and use the driving data and device usage data to calculate an overall driving score.

Safe Walk. If the Guardian provides emergency contact(s) for their Dependent, the Dependent may set a PIN that they can use to cancel an SOS alert during a Safe Walk session.

Roadside Assistance. When a Dependent requests service, Family collects name, phone number, car details, the requested service, and the service address and shares that information with our Roadside Assistance provider, Signature Motor Club.

How we use information collected.

These service providers use personal information disclosed to them only to provide Family services, including for analytics, and are required to delete the information when it is no longer needed to provide the service. We do not sell information we collect from Dependents as part of this service or information from or about Dependents’ devices or share it for any other purpose, including targeted advertising.

Service Providers

Family shares information with Mapbox for mapping and location services. We also share device identifiers with Google Analytics for app analytics services so that Family can optimize app performance and with PubNub to deliver alerts that Guardians set about their Dependents’ location or activity. When the Family VPN is enabled, we share the Dependent’s online activity with Cloudflare for content filtering and web and app activity monitoring. We share location, motion data, and information about phone usage while driving with Cambridge Mobile Telematics for driving scores and the driving analytics that are visible in the Family app. If the Guardian has enabled Roadside Assistance and a Dependent requests service, we share information needed to respond to the request with Signature Motor Club, including the Dependent’s name, phone number, type of service requested, car details, and service address.

Choices and controls.

For Guardians and Members. Depending on the features enabled, Guardians and Members provide consent for the collection of certain information from their devices, including , motion activity data, and device contact lists. They can update their GPS location, motion activity data and device contacts permissions in their device settings. They can also enable and disable Driving Insights, Roadside Assistance, and 24/7 Assist in the Family app.

GPS and network location

To allow GPS and network location sharing, Guardians and Members must download the Family app and provide consent. Guardians and Members can use their device settings or the Family app to control GPS location sharing. Guardians and Members can only use the Family app to control network location sharing. If the app is uninstalled, the Guardian or Member must reinstall the app to change their network location sharing settings. Network location is not available for any wireless lines not on the same account as the Guardian who subscribed to Family.

For Dependents. When Guardians set up Family, they provide consent for Family to collect personal information from Dependents' devices. When Dependents download the Family Companion app, Family asks for consent to collect certain information depending on the features enabled, including precise location, motion activity data, device contacts, and web and app activity monitoring.

Dependents can change permissions in their device settings for collection of motion activity data, device contacts, and GPS location. If a Dependent changes location sharing permissions in their device settings or if the Family Companion app is uninstalled, Family will continue to collect and share estimated network location unless the Guardian removes the Family Dependent profile in the Family account. Dependents can also turn off Driving Insights in the Family Companion app settings and Guardians can disable Roadside Assistance in the Family app settings.

Some Family plans ask Dependents to consent to the use of that prevent the deletion of the Companion app or the VPN, which is used for certain parental controls, like web and app activity monitoring or content filtering.

Tamper controls

Dependents with an iOS device are asked to install a mobile device management (MDM) profile, which includes the installation of a VPN. The MDM profile prevents the removal of the VPN and the Companion app. To uninstall the Companion app or the VPN, the MDM profile must be deleted from the Dependent’s device. Dependents with an Android device are asked to install a VPN and enable Accessibility settings for the Family Companion app. Once Accessibility settings are enabled, a PIN is required to uninstall the VPN or Companion app. The PIN can be found in the Guardian’s Family app settings. If the Family VPN is uninstalled, Family web browsing and app activity monitoring services are disabled, but screen time information may still be collected if the Dependent device uses an Android operating system and the Android device settings permit it.

If a Dependent or Guardian removes the Family Companion app from a Dependent’s device, precise location, real-time motion activity, screen time monitoring and web, app and driving activity monitoring services will no longer be available within Family.

A Guardian can revoke permission for Family to collect all personal information from a Dependent by removing the Family Dependent profile in the Guardian’s Family app. will continue to collect information to provide wireless service to the line.

Guardians may review the personal information collected by Family from Dependent devices. For more information or assistance with these choices or if you have questions or concerns about our privacy practices, you can contact us at verizonfamily@verizon.com.
